Imported fire ant mound in pecan orchard

Imported fire ants in pecan orchards can be both a pest and a beneficial. They prey on other pecan insect pests like hickory shuckworms and pecan weevils, but may aggravate aphid populations. Mound forming activities reduce soil compaction, but they may also harm sprinkler irrigation systems, electrical equipment and pose a threat to field workers.
